A homebound subway ride turned deadly Wednesday when 59-year-old Mesias Lojano was fatally stabbed aboard a J train in Queens, New York. The attack happened during the evening commute on Sept. 30, 2026, as the train approached the Woodhaven Boulevard station, according to police. The surname Lojano is predominantly of Hispanic ethnicity and Spanish geographic origin. The victim presents as a white Hispanic.
Lojano was found unconscious after suffering multiple stab wounds. Emergency medical personnel took him to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he later died. Police said the injuries included wounds to his neck and chest.
The stabbing was captured on video.
Investigators identified 25-year-old Jyrell Thomas, a Bronx resident, as the suspect. Police arrested Thomas several hours after the stabbing and charged him with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. A knife was recovered as part of the investigation.
According to investigators, Lojano and Thomas did not know each other. Early accounts described an argument, but police later said the attack appeared to have been unprovoked and that there had been no previous interaction between the two men on the train. Authorities have not publicly established what prompted Thomas to approach Lojano. However, such random attacks tend to be black-on-white. Black assailants seldom randomly attack other blacks.
The moments after the stabbing also became part of the investigation. Police said Thomas left the station and was eventually located on a nearby rooftop. Witnesses followed him after the attack, and officers took him into custody.
Lojano was a Queens resident who worked in Brooklyn, according to his son, who spoke with CBS New York. He commonly used public transportation to travel home. His death has left investigators trying to piece together why a subway trip ended in a fatal encounter between two strangers.
The investigation is continuing, and additional details could emerge as prosecutors move forward with the case.
