HOOVER, Ala. — Christina Chambers, a respected former sports reporter and broadcast educator in the Birmingham area, died Tuesday at age 38 in what authorities described as an apparent murder-suicide at her Hoover residence.
Hoover police responded shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday to a home in the Highland Manor Court area following a 911 call from a family member who discovered Chambers and her husband, Johnny Rimes Jr., 41, unresponsive from gunshot wounds. Paramedics pronounced both dead at the scene. Their 3-year-old son, Constantine, was found unharmed inside the home.
Investigators classified the incident as a domestic-related murder-suicide, with no ongoing threat to the public. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office estimated the shootings occurred between 6:15 a.m. and 9 a.m. No motive has been disclosed, and the probe remains active.
Chambers built a notable career in Alabama sports journalism. A Cullman native and 2011 University of Alabama at Birmingham graduate, where she competed in cross country and track on scholarship, she began broadcasting at stations in Georgia and Montgomery before joining WBRC Fox 6 in Birmingham in 2015. There, she covered high school athletics, SEC games and events like the Mercedes Marathon, often while participating as a runner herself. She left full-time reporting in 2021 to teach broadcast journalism at Thompson High School in Alabaster, continuing freelance sideline work through the 2025 football season. Earlier this year, she moved to a corporate communications role at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama.
At Thompson High, Chambers earned recognition as the 2024 Advisor of the Year from the Alabama Scholastic Press Association. Her student broadcast team secured multiple state awards, including the 2025 Alex House Journalism Sustainability Award.
Colleagues and community members expressed profound grief. Former coworkers described her as energetic and dedicated, with a warm personality that connected easily with athletes, students and viewers. Alabaster City Schools Superintendent Wayne Vickers noted her strong bonds with students and lasting contributions to their program. Tributes highlighted her passion for mentoring young journalists and her avid running, including multiple Boston Marathon qualifications.
A fund has been established to support her young son's future. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday in Cullman.
