MIDWAY, Texas — A 45-year-old man carried out a series of shootings in Madison County that left two coworkers dead and his former partner critically injured before he died in police custody, authorities said.

The sequence began early on Feb. 13 when Jeffery Rayshun Foster arrived at an oil pad site off FM 2346, where he worked alongside Michael James Nash, 62, and Conrado Ruelas Garcia, 49, according to investigators with the Madison County Sheriff's Office. Officials said Foster fatally shot both men at the location, with Nash suffering a single gunshot wound and Ruelas multiple wounds, including one to the back of the head. Foster then took a company pickup truck and drove to Fraley's Food Store in Midway.

At approximately 7:50 a.m., Foster entered the store and opened fire on employee Daniesha Lashelle Wiley, 38, striking her several times during what deputies described as an aggravated robbery. Wiley, who had previously been in a relationship with Foster, told responding officers that he was the assailant before she was airlifted to St. Joseph Health Regional Hospital in critical condition. Surveillance footage reviewed by deputies corroborated her account, showing Foster committing the attack.

Foster fled the scene in the stolen truck. Around 8:19 a.m., Texas Department of Public Safety troopers spotted the vehicle on FM 1119 and attempted a traffic stop. When Foster refused to pull over, a multi-county pursuit ensued involving troopers and deputies from Madison and Leon counties. Law enforcement performed a precision immobilization technique to halt the truck, taking Foster into custody without further incident.

Upon arrival at the Madison County Jail shortly after 9 a.m., Foster became unresponsive during the intake process, sheriff's officials reported. Jail staff and emergency medical personnel administered lifesaving measures, but a justice of the peace pronounced him dead at the facility. The Texas Rangers launched an independent probe into the circumstances of his death, with no additional details released pending autopsy results.

Meanwhile, at 10:03 a.m., deputies responding to a report of a body at the oil pad site discovered Nash's remains. Three hours later, at 1:11 p.m., search teams located Ruelas nearby in the same remote area. Investigators linked Foster to the homicides through evidence at the scenes, including ballistics and witness statements, concluding he targeted the victims due to workplace ties and personal connections.

No formal charges were filed against Foster given his death, but the sheriff's office classified the events as two homicides, one attempted murder and an aggravated robbery. The Texas Rangers continue to assist in the ongoing investigation.

In the small community of Midway, residents expressed shock over the violence in an area known for its quiet rural life. Friends and family remembered Ruelas as a dedicated father and hardworking immigrant from Jalisco, Mexico, who ran a landscaping business and cherished time with his horses and family. A community fundraiser quickly raised funds to support his widow, Luz Ruelas, and their children with funeral expenses and lost income. Nash, described by coworkers as reliable and kind, left behind grieving relatives who declined public comment. Wiley has since stabilized in the hospital, according to medical updates shared by authorities.

Local leaders called for unity, with church services and vigils held to honor the victims and promote healing amid the tragedy.
