DELTA TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A local man has been charged with premeditated murder after authorities say he rammed his vehicle into a family during an evening stroll and then fired shots at them, resulting in the death of a young child and severe wounds to three adults.

Prosecutors allege that Alexander Lamar Banks Jr., 21, acted on perceived online threats compelling him to harm others to protect his own relatives. Court records detail how Banks prepared the day prior by gathering ammunition and a firearm from his father's home before carrying out the assault.

The sequence began around 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 13, when a 37-year-old father, his 33-year-old wife, and their 3-year-old daughter were walking along a residential street in this suburb west of Lansing. Security footage and investigative accounts describe Banks driving his father's car directly at the group, striking the father and sending the child's pink wagon tumbling.

According to police reports, Banks then stepped out, discarded a backpack, retrieved a 12-gauge shotgun, and began shooting at the fallen victims. He reportedly reloaded and fired additional rounds, then used the weapon to strike the father repeatedly.

A 72-year-old neighbor, hearing the commotion, rushed to intervene and distract the assailant. Authorities say Banks turned on her, beating her with the gun and causing critical head injuries that required emergency brain surgery. The attack halted shortly after, with Banks fleeing the area on foot.

Emergency responders arrived to find the toddler unresponsive; she was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The parents sustained serious gunshot wounds but were listed in stable condition within days. The elderly intervener remained in critical care, facing a long recovery.

Banks was apprehended about 30 minutes later in nearby Lansing after he approached a residence and confessed to a shooting. During questioning, he told detectives the online messages had driven him to scout the neighborhood multiple times before selecting the family as targets.

In court on Feb. 17, Banks stood mute as a judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf. He faces one count of first-degree premeditated murder, three counts of assault with intent to murder, four felony firearm violations, one count of carrying a weapon with unlawful intent, and one misdemeanor for possessing a loaded gun in a vehicle. A magistrate denied bail and mandated a psychiatric evaluation to assess his competency for trial, with the next hearing set for April.

Residents expressed shock over the violence in their quiet community. Neighbors described the family as close-knit and the child as full of energy, while the intervener was hailed as a hero for her bravery. A crowdfunding campaign for medical and funeral expenses quickly gathered tens of thousands in donations, reflecting widespread sympathy. Officials urged anyone with further details to contact investigators as the probe continues.
