CITRA, Fla. (DailyKenn.com) — A 32-year-old man faces charges in the death of his girlfriend's 3-year-old daughter, whom authorities say he bound and struck repeatedly in a trailer home, leading to a community outcry for broader accountability.
The child's mother left the home in northeast Marion County that morning to run errands, leaving Coombs as the primary caregiver for Paisley and four other children ranging in age from 1 to 9. According to deputies, Coombs admitted he had tied Paisley's hands with a robe belt and her legs with painter's tape the night before to prevent her from reaching into her diaper, a practice he said he repeated that day.
Around 10:30 a.m., during a phone call with Coombs, the mother heard Paisley say, "I love you, mommy," in the background. Less than 30 minutes later, Coombs called again to report the girl was unresponsive. He delayed dialing 911 for about 40 minutes, authorities said, citing fear as his reason.
When the mother returned, she found Paisley limp and cold in a high chair. A relative, the girl's great-aunt, arrived soon after and began CPR after noticing bruises on the child's body and seeing Coombs standing idle. Paramedics rushed Paisley to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Children in the home told investigators Coombs punched Paisley in the chest to quiet her and slammed her against a wall. The great-aunt recounted one child saying, "He killed her," and described the residence as a "house of horror." Deputies observed ligature marks on Paisley's wrists and ankles, along with bruising on her chest inconsistent with resuscitation efforts.
Coombs, who has prior battery convictions, initially denied harming the girl but later confessed to dropping her while bound, hearing her gasp for air, and striking her multiple times until he realized he had "taken it too far," according to arrest reports. He remains jailed without bond.
The tragedy sparked protests on Feb. 21, where dozens of residents gathered outside the sheriff's office in Ocala to demand justice. Paisley's father addressed the crowd, voicing grief over what he called a preventable loss and pledging to fight for accountability. Demonstrators criticized the investigation's pace and called for charges against the mother, questioning her awareness of prior abuse. Authorities confirmed the other children were placed in protective custody, and the Department of Children and Families is reviewing the case for signs of earlier neglect.
Local officials urged anyone suspecting child abuse to report it immediately, emphasizing the need for community vigilance in preventing such incidents.
