Police officers responded just after midnight on March 15 to reports of a shooting at East 26th Street and Prospect Avenue. They found Lickhart lying in a nearby alley suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Emergency crews rushed her to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. She died March 17, and homicide detectives took over the investigation.

Surveillance video from the area captured key details in the moments before and after the shooting. Recordings showed Lickhart getting out of a truck, walking through an alley and heading toward the gas station. A man wearing a cowboy hat, sweatshirt and cowboy boots — later identified as Dante Williams, 22 — entered and left the gas station before approaching her. The two walked together north along Prospect Avenue toward East 26th Street.

Video from shortly afterward showed Williams running back toward the gas station, discarding a pair of gloves in an alley and appearing to wipe his hands. One witness reported hearing two gunshots around that time. Additional footage captured Williams later interacting with another person outside the gas station while making a gun gesture with his hand toward the alley. He told a gas station employee he had cut his hand and received bandages.

Officers recovered two .22-caliber shell casings near Lickhart. A handgun taken from Williams during his detention later matched those casings through ballistics testing at the Kansas City Police Crime Laboratory. Detectives also recovered the discarded gloves. Williams was arrested while wearing the same distinctive clothing seen in the surveillance images. Biometric analysis of video stills and his proximity to the scene helped confirm his identity.

According to court documents, Williams initially agreed to speak with investigators while they collected video evidence but requested an attorney after his statements did not align with the recordings. He faces one count of second-degree murder, alleging he caused Lickhart’s death by shooting her with the purpose of causing serious physical injury, and one count of armed criminal action. He is being held in the Jackson County Detention Center on a $100,000 cash-only bond.
