HARTFORD, Conn., and AUSTIN, Texas (DailyKenn.com) — Authorities in two states are probing separate gunfire incidents that resulted in the deaths of a teenager in Connecticut and two young men in Texas, highlighting persistent concerns over public safety.

In Hartford, police reported that 17-year-old Camden Siegal, a senior at William H. Hall High School in West Hartford, was fatally wounded by a stray bullet on February 22, 2026. According to Hartford Police Lt. Aaron Boisvert, officers on patrol near Ann Uccello Street heard shots around 1:50 a.m. and discovered Siegal unresponsive outside PeoplesBank Arena. He had been out with friends and was entering a rideshare vehicle when gunfire erupted nearby. Family members stated Siegal was not the target and became caught in crossfire from an unrelated dispute. He was rushed to a hospital in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries two days later, on February 24. Police confirmed he donated his organs after his passing.

A witness working security at the arena, Elijah Ahmed, told investigators he heard the shots from inside an office, followed by screams from people in the area. Hartford police described the scene as active, with more than a dozen evidence markers placed on the sidewalk. No suspects have been arrested, and the investigation continues, with authorities reviewing surveillance footage and following leads. Siegal's family portrayed him as a kind and supportive young man, months from graduation, whose everyday actions brightened lives around him.

Separately, in Austin, a mass shooting outside Buford's Backyard Beer Garden on West Sixth Street claimed the lives of 19-year-old Ryder Harrington and 30-year-old Jorge Pederson, along with another victim, on March 1, 2026. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said the attack began shortly before 2 a.m. when 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne drove past the crowded bar in an SUV, firing a handgun through the window at patrons. He then parked nearby, exited with a rifle, and continued shooting into the crowd.

Witnesses recounted scenes of confusion and fear. Pedicab driver Heidi Nicole, stationed across the street, described hearing rapid gunfire and seeing people scatter for cover. University of Texas student Nathan Cuomo, nearby getting food, captured video of Diagne confronting officers before being shot. Another survivor, Kelson Li, who was inside the bar, recalled pandemonium as patrons fled, separated from friends amid the hysteria.

Responding officers arrived within a minute and fatally shot Diagne after he approached them armed. Police noted he wore clothing with an Iranian flag design and the phrase "Property of Allah," prompting the FBI to assist in examining potential terrorism links. Diagne, a U.S. citizen originally from Senegal, had no prior law enforcement flags. No charges were filed as the shooter died at the scene.

Harrington, a Texas Tech University student and fraternity member, was remembered by peers for his lively spirit. Pederson, an amateur MMA fighter from Minnesota who recently relocated to Austin for a sales job, had been training for his professional debut. His mother, Nancy Pederson, called him a dedicated son pursuing his ambitions. At least 13 others were injured, with some in critical condition.

Investigators in both cases emphasized the complexity of the probes, involving video analysis and interviews with dozens of people.
