WALDORF, Md. (DailyKenn.com) — Authorities have charged a local man in the killing of a 47-year-old resident found shot outside an apartment last summer, marking a breakthrough in a case that initially left few leads.

Shawn Lamont Wade Jr., 32, of Waldorf, faces accusations in the death of David Leroy Raley, according to the Charles County Sheriff's Office. The arrest came after months of detective work, culminating in an indictment by a grand jury.

The sequence of events began on the afternoon of July 3, 2025, when emergency dispatchers received a call at 4:23 p.m. reporting an unresponsive man on the ground in the 3000 block of October Place, a residential area in Waldorf. Responding officers arrived to discover Raley lying near an apartment entrance, suffering from a single gunshot injury to his torso.

Law enforcement personnel, along with paramedics, immediately administered emergency medical care in an attempt to stabilize him. Despite their efforts, medical responders declared Raley dead where he lay. His remains were then sent to the state medical examiner's office in Baltimore for a full postmortem examination, which confirmed the cause of death as homicide due to the gunshot.

Investigators from the sheriff's criminal division took over the probe, canvassing the densely populated neighborhood for clues. They appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone with knowledge of the shooting to come forward, including through anonymous tip lines. Authorities noted the potential value of surveillance recordings from nearby properties, given the location's urban setting.

No immediate suspects emerged in the days following the incident, and details about a possible motive remained scarce. The case progressed quietly until early this year, when evidence pointed to Wade as the alleged perpetrator.

On March 4, detectives executed an arrest warrant against Wade after securing the grand jury's approval. He now stands charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter, and multiple violations related to firearm possession and use. Following his apprehension, Wade was transported to the Charles County Detention Center, where he awaits a hearing on bond conditions.

Sheriff's officials described the development as a significant step toward justice for Raley's family, though they emphasized that the inquiry continues. They renewed calls for additional information, stressing that even minor details could aid in strengthening the prosecution's case.

Raley, a lifelong area resident born in nearby La Plata, left behind relatives mourning his sudden loss. The shooting has highlighted ongoing concerns about gun-related incidents in the community, prompting law enforcement to reinforce patrols in similar neighborhoods.

As the legal process advances, prosecutors will present evidence in court, with Wade presumed innocent until a verdict is reached.
