ROANOKE, Va. (DailyKenn.com) — Authorities in Roanoke arrested a man Sunday in the fatal shooting of a 56-year-old woman outside a convenience store, capping a swift investigation aided by public tips.

Police received reports of gunfire at approximately 9:50 a.m. in the 1600 block of Burrell Street Northwest, prompting officers to rush to the scene, the Roanoke Police Department reported.

Upon arrival, they discovered Kimberly Sue Lee suffering from critical gunshot injuries in the parking area of the store. Emergency responders attempted aid, but Lee, a Roanoke resident, was declared deceased shortly thereafter, according to officials.

Detectives launched an immediate probe, gathering evidence and canvassing the area for leads. Community members provided crucial information through phone calls and direct cooperation, enabling investigators to pinpoint a suspect within hours, police explained.

By afternoon, authorities took 26-year-old Sincere Elijah Hardy into custody at a location in nearby Salem. Hardy, who has no significant prior criminal history beyond minor traffic infractions, now faces one count of second-degree murder, as detailed in charging documents filed with the Roanoke General District Court.

His initial court appearance, set for the following morning, was rescheduled to the next month, records indicate.

Investigators have yet to determine a clear reason for the attack, and details about any prior connection between Hardy and Lee remain undisclosed, officials noted. The probe continues, with forensic analysis and further interviews expected to clarify the events.

Lee was recognized in the area for her regular presence near Orange Avenue, where she engaged amiably with those around her, police Chief Scott Booth said.

In a prepared release, Booth commended the response: "The swift and coordinated efforts of our staff, combined with the invaluable support of our community through calls and investigative cooperation, led to the successful apprehension of the suspect. Mrs. Lee was a well-known presence along Orange Avenue, and I extend my heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew her."

While no eyewitness descriptions of the actual gunfire have been released, authorities emphasized that anonymous tips from residents played a key role in identifying Hardy and securing his arrest without incident.

The convenience store, a staple in the northwest neighborhood, remained closed for several hours as crime scene technicians processed the site for ballistics and other evidence, police confirmed.

Hardy's detention marks the city's first homicide charge of the year, underscoring ongoing efforts to address gun-related incidents through community partnerships, officials added.

Prosecutors anticipate presenting preliminary evidence at the rescheduled hearing, though no trial date has been established.
