BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. (DailyKenn.com) — Authorities have charged two teenagers with first-degree murder in the shooting death of a young man whose body was discovered in a burned-out car at a remote boat ramp, capping a probe that traced the suspects to Texas.

Hunter Howell, 22, of Pembroke Pines, left his home on the evening of Jan. 30 to meet friends and conduct business, according to statements from his girlfriend and a close friend to investigators. His girlfriend reported last hearing from him around 7 or 8 p.m. that night. The friend recalled spending time with Howell earlier that day before they parted ways about 7:30 p.m., noting that Howell often relied on rides from acquaintances Jayden DeJesus and Trevon Quinones because his own vehicle had been damaged by a lightning strike.

On Jan. 31, DeJesus and Quinones contacted Howell to spend time together, authorities said. Howell agreed, changed clothes, and entered their vehicle, a green Honda Accord owned by DeJesus. Cellphone records placed DeJesus near the West Broward Boat Ramp off U.S. Highway 27 around 8:45 p.m. that evening. Investigators believe the pair drove Howell to the isolated site in the Everglades, shot him once in the left side of the head, robbed him of his possessions, and attempted to destroy evidence.

According to arrest warrants, the suspects placed a white hooded sweatshirt over Howell's face, positioned an incendiary device in the car, and set it ablaze. The fire caused thermal injuries to Howell's hands and clothing but failed to fully consume the vehicle after the doors were closed, extinguishing the flames. They then concealed the Honda in tall grass on the north side of the ramp before fleeing, records show. DeJesus later told his girlfriend the car was "broken" but did not report it stolen.

Deputies discovered the suspicious vehicle on the morning of Feb. 1 while responding to a call. They found Howell deceased in the front passenger seat, with an autopsy confirming the gunshot as the cause of death amid signs of deliberate burning. A friend informed detectives that DeJesus and Quinones had deleted their Instagram accounts shortly after the killing, raising suspicions. The group had previously visited the boat ramp on Sundays to play loud music from cars with enhanced speakers, the friend added.

Surveillance video from Quinones' apartment building showed the suspects wearing clothing that matched items found in the vehicle. SunPass toll records captured an image of DeJesus and a passenger in attire consistent with the scene. Verizon data further documented their movements to and from the ramp during the time of the homicide.

DeJesus, 19, of Miami, and Quinones, 18, of Forney, Texas, were apprehended during a traffic stop in Kaufman County, Texas, on Feb. 11. Both face charges of first-degree murder with a firearm and tampering with physical evidence, court documents state. They were extradited to Broward County and are being held without bond as the investigation continues, officials said.

Howell's father confirmed to detectives that his son lived with him and earned money selling marijuana, while family members described the act as ruthless, based on details provided by authorities.
