Recent fatal shootings in three states have led to arrests and charges against suspects in separate incidents spanning from late January to early March 2026.
In Broward County, Florida, 22-year-old Hunter Howell of Pembroke Pines was last seen alive on the evening of January 30, when he left home to meet friends. His girlfriend reported hearing from him around 7 or 8 p.m., and a friend said they parted ways about 7:30 p.m. The next day, January 31, Howell agreed to spend time with acquaintances Jayden DeJesus, 19, of Miami, and Trevon Quinones, 18, originally from Forney, Texas. Howell entered a green Honda Accord owned by DeJesus.
Cellphone data placed the vehicle near the West Broward Boat Ramp off U.S. Highway 27 around 8:45 p.m. Authorities allege the suspects drove Howell to the remote Everglades location, shot him once in the head, robbed him, placed a hooded sweatshirt over his face, set an incendiary device in the car, and attempted to burn it before hiding the vehicle in tall grass and fleeing. The fire caused some damage but did not fully destroy the car after the doors were closed.
Deputies discovered the burned vehicle and Howell's body in the front passenger seat on the morning of February 1. An autopsy confirmed the gunshot wound as the cause of death, with evidence of attempted burning. Investigators used surveillance video, SunPass toll records, cellphone data, and witness information—including the suspects deleting social media accounts—to identify them. DeJesus and Quinones were arrested during a traffic stop in Kaufman County, Texas, on February 11. They face charges of first-degree murder with a firearm and tampering with physical evidence, were extradited to Broward County, and are held without bond.
In Roanoke, Virginia, a shooting occurred on March 1 at approximately 9:50 a.m. in the 1600 block of Burrell Street Northwest outside a convenience store. Officers found 56-year-old Kimberly Sue Lee of Roanoke suffering from critical gunshot wounds in the parking area. Despite emergency aid, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police launched an immediate investigation, canvassing the area and receiving key tips from community members. These tips helped identify 26-year-old Sincere Elijah Hardy of Salem as a suspect. Hardy was arrested that afternoon without incident. He faces one count of second-degree murder and has no significant prior criminal history beyond minor traffic violations. His initial court appearance was rescheduled to a later date. Authorities have not disclosed a motive or any prior relationship between Hardy and Lee, and the investigation continues with forensic analysis ongoing.
In Waldorf, Maryland, David Leroy Raley, 47, was found shot on July 3, 2025, after emergency dispatchers received a call at 4:23 p.m. reporting an unresponsive man in the 3000 block of October Place. Officers discovered Raley near an apartment entrance with a single gunshot wound to his torso. Paramedics attempted to save him, but he was declared dead at the scene.
The autopsy ruled the death a homicide due to the gunshot. Investigators canvassed the neighborhood, sought public tips, and reviewed potential surveillance footage, but no immediate suspects emerged. Months of detective work led to a grand jury indictment, and on March 4, 2026, Shawn Lamont Wade Jr., 32, of Waldorf, was arrested on a warrant. He faces charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter, and multiple firearm-related offenses. Wade is detained at the Charles County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing, and the investigation remains active.
