Late on April 10, Laurens County deputies responded to a call about a shooting on the 3000 block of Todd Quarter Road. When they got there, they found Fortner badly wounded from a gunshot. He died at the scene. The coroner later confirmed the cause: a single gunshot wound. The manner of death? Homicide.

Investigators identified 47-year-old Maurice Marquis Suber as the suspect and put out a murder warrant. They asked the public for tips while they searched overnight. By Sunday morning, Suber was in custody. He now faces a murder charge and is being held without bond.

Kevin Fortner was a local guy, born and raised in the Upstate. He had family roots in the area and was just starting what should have been a full life ahead of him. There aren’t a lot of details yet about what led up to that night – no public word on any argument or prior connection – but the sheriff’s office is treating it as a targeted incident that turned deadly.
