Barberton, Ohio — A 20-year-old man from Akron lost his life after a shooting that ended with a vehicle slamming into a utility pole in this Summit County community. Benjamin Hutchison died on June 18, 2026, from a gunshot wound to the torso, according to the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office, which ruled the death a homicide.

Police responded around 10 p.m. that Thursday to reports of a crash. Officers found Hutchison on the sidewalk near the wrecked car, where bystanders had tried to help him. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. Two other people inside the vehicle suffered injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Investigators quickly focused on the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the crash. Within days, Barberton police arrested three teenagers in connection with the case. Two 15-year-olds from Barberton and a 16-year-old from Akron now face murder charges. Authorities booked all three into the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center. Officers received help from the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force to locate one of the suspects.

Hutchison, an Akron native, became the victim in a case that moved from a late-night crash scene to swift juvenile arrests. Details about what led to the shooting remain limited as the investigation continues. Prosecutors have not released information about a possible motive or the exact relationship between Hutchison and the accused teens.

This incident draws attention to how quickly situations can turn tragic in everyday settings. Young adults like Hutchison often navigate life in the Akron-Canton region, balancing work, family, and personal goals. His death at 20 highlights the sudden risks that can interrupt those paths. Ohio authorities treat such cases involving juveniles with specific legal processes focused on both accountability and the juvenile justice system.

Barberton police continue to gather evidence and piece together the events of that evening. The case remains active, with court proceedings expected to follow standard timelines for juvenile matters in Summit County.
