CHESTER, South Carolina — A 16-year-old lost his life in a sudden burst of gunfire last month, leaving authorities in this South Carolina community piecing together what led to the tragedy.

Avery O’Brien West died at the scene after someone opened fire from a passing car on the evening of May 3, 2026. The attack happened around 8:20 p.m. A 17-year-old who was nearby suffered a gunshot wound to the back and needed hospital treatment. Officials say a third person also appeared to be a target.

South Carolina Law Enforcement Division agents quickly took the lead. They focused on a 2014 Ford Focus believed to be the vehicle used in the shooting. Evidence included video from the area and statements from people who saw what happened.

Investigators arrested two men they say were inside that car. John-David Estes, 21, and Quentin Javor Craig Jr., 24, both face murder charges along with two counts of attempted murder each. According to warrants, Estes owned the Focus, and Craig carried the firearm used that night. Estes reportedly admitted his role to detectives and pointed to Craig as well.

A third person, Kenyetta Adrryll Sims, 53, also landed in custody. She stands accused of helping Craig avoid capture afterward by giving him a place to stay, sharing false details with police, and aiding his travel out of the area.

All three appeared in Chester County court and remain held without bond. The case highlights how quickly a single evening can change everything for families and how investigators rely on multiple pieces — video, witness accounts, and admissions — to build their arguments.

SLED continues to examine the events of that Sunday night. Anyone with additional information can contact the agency directly.
