CHERAW, S.C. — A late-night drive through familiar roads in Chesterfield County ended in tragedy for 20-year-old Landon Scott Sellers on May 4, 2026, when gunfire struck the pickup truck he was driving and claimed his life.
Deputies from the Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office arrived shortly after 9:30 p.m. to find Sellers inside the wrecked vehicle. He had suffered a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. What began as a response to reports of shots fired quickly revealed a more complex situation: an ongoing dispute that escalated into exchanged gunfire involving multiple people.
Sellers, a 2024 graduate of Cheraw High School who grew up in the Patrick area, was not believed to be the main target in the confrontation, according to investigators. He also was not thought to have fired any shots during the incident. Yet he became the one who paid the ultimate price when bullets hit the truck he controlled.
Authorities moved quickly in the days that followed. Three teenagers — Zion Elijah McRae, 18, Jihad Ellis Lee, 18, and Elisjay Zayon Christian James, 19 — now face murder charges. A fourth person, Maurice Brown Sr., 42, turned himself in and was charged with tampering with evidence. A fifth suspect also received charges in connection with the case.
The investigation drew on evidence review, witness statements, and continued leads. Sheriff’s officials described a scenario where Sellers rode with others when the dispute boiled over. The crash followed soon after he was hit. For his family, the loss hit hard. Born in Florence, Sellers was remembered by loved ones as a young man with a big personality who had his whole life ahead.
Cases like this highlight how quickly personal conflicts can spiral in small communities. One moment, everyday routines continue; the next, decisions made in heated seconds change everything. Sellers’ death leaves his parents, Tammy and Scott Sellers, and others who knew him searching for answers and navigating sudden grief.
Prosecutors from the Fourth Circuit Solicitor’s Office consulted on the charges as the case advanced. While the legal process continues, the focus remains on accountability for those involved. Sellers’ story serves as a sobering reminder that young lives can intersect with violence in unexpected ways, even on ordinary nights in places like Cheraw.
