A late-night disturbance in Janesville, Wisconsin, turned deadly Aug. 9 when 25-year-old Jason Kaplan was fatally shot, leaving investigators to piece together what led to the confrontation.
Police were called shortly after midnight after receiving a report of a disturbance. Information later indicated that shots had been fired. Officers arrived to find three people suffering from gunshot wounds, according to reports on the case. Kaplan was among those injured and later died at a hospital.
Two other people were also shot. Their injuries were reported as not life-threatening.
The investigation moved quickly in the days that followed. Four people were arrested in connection with the shooting and appeared in Rock County Court on Aug. 12, according to WMTV. Each suspect was ordered held on a $2 million cash bond and prohibited from contacting people involved in the case.
Court proceedings have also provided investigators with additional information about what happened. Attorneys said much of the interaction before and during the incident was captured on video. Another person was reportedly struck in the head with a gun during the confrontation.
Authorities have not publicly provided a complete account of the events leading up to the shooting or established a final motive. That leaves important questions for investigators and prosecutors as the case moves through the court system.
The arrested suspects and reported charges (as of mid-August 2026 reports; party-to-a-crime/PTAC modifiers apply in most cases) are:
Mantezz Granger, 20: Party to a crime – first-degree intentional homicide; three counts of party to a crime – attempted first-degree intentional homicide; two counts of party to a crime – recklessly endangering safety (or first-degree reckless endangering safety). He was the driver of a gray SUV linked to the scene and was arrested by Beloit police.
Demetrius Cooper, 19: Party to a crime – first-degree intentional homicide; three counts of party to a crime – attempted first-degree intentional homicide; two counts of party to a crime – first-degree reckless endangering safety. Arrested after being seen leaving a residence during a search warrant.
Tyshawn Howe, 19: Party to a crime – first-degree intentional homicide; three counts of party to a crime – attempted first-degree intentional homicide; two counts of (first-degree) recklessly endangering safety. He turned himself in.
Marshaun Jones, 21: First-degree intentional homicide (with party-to-a-crime elements on other counts); three counts of party to a crime – attempted first-degree intentional homicide; two counts of party to a crime – first-degree reckless endangering safety. Arrested in Monroe, Wisconsin, during a multi-agency operation.
Charles Crenshaw III (or Charles Crenshaw), 20: Arrested on a felony probation violation after turning himself in. His involvement in the shooting was still under investigation in the reports; he had not been charged with the homicide-related offenses.
Four of the men (Granger, Cooper, Howe, and Jones) faced the homicide and related charges in Rock County court, with $2 million cash bonds reported. Prosecutors described the incident as stemming from a jealousy-related dispute involving Granger and an ex-girlfriend who was with Kaplan.
For now, the central fact is that Kaplan, 25, lost his life during the Janesville incident. The surviving victims are recovering, while the criminal case against the four suspects proceeds.
The investigation and court proceedings are expected to provide more details about the circumstances surrounding Kaplan's death, including what preceded the confrontation and the individual roles allegedly played by those charged.
