A routine workday in downtown Detroit ended in tragedy Sunday when 34-year-old Jaquoya Wix was fatally stabbed while taking a break from her job.

Wix, a mother of a 15-year-old daughter, was working her regular shift at a Chipotle restaurant on Sept. 20 when the attack occurred at about 2:30 p.m., according to Detroit police and the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. Investigators say a black male approached Wix while she was sitting during her break and stabbed her multiple times before running from the area.

Wix managed to reach a nearby business before collapsing. Medics treated her at the scene and took her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Suspect arrested shortly after the killing

Police used surveillance cameras and other technology to track a suspect through downtown Detroit. Officers located and arrested him roughly 20 minutes after the stabbing, authorities said. Investigators also said they believe they recovered the knife used in the attack.

Authorities identified the suspect as Devon Jason Watson, 42, of Detroit. Prosecutors say Watson and Wix did not know each other, and investigators have described the encounter as apparently random.

On Sept. 23, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office charged Watson with first-degree premeditated murder. He appeared for arraignment by video and was denied bond. His next court proceeding is scheduled for Sept. 30 for a probable cause conference.

Investigation and court case continue

Prosecutors said the circumstances known so far support the first-degree murder charge, even though authorities believe the attack was random. Prosecutor Kym Worthy said the case will now move through the court system as investigators and prosecutors continue reviewing the evidence.
