FAIRBORN, Ohio — A Sunday morning shooting in Fairborn left 26-year-old Joseph Mitchell dead and another man critically injured, while police later took a 24-year-old black man into custody on murder and felonious assault charges.

The shooting happened Sept. 20, 2026, at about 9:05 a.m. Fairborn police responded after receiving reports of multiple gunshots and found two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims were taken to Miami Valley Hospital for treatment. Mitchell was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Investigation leads to suspect

Investigators from several law enforcement agencies worked to identify the person they believed was responsible. The investigation involved the Fairborn Police Department along with officers from Dayton, Trotwood and Huber Heights, according to WHIO.

Authorities identified the suspect as Cato Mayberry, 24. Mayberry later turned himself in at the Montgomery County Jail. He was then transferred to Fairborn police for questioning before being booked into the Greene County Jail.

Greene County booking records list Mayberry as facing charges of murder and felonious assault. The case remains pending, and the charges are allegations; a criminal charge is not a finding of guilt.

Another victim remains unidentified

The second man injured in the shooting was hospitalized in critical condition, according to the police report cited by WHIO. Authorities had not publicly identified him in the initial reports.
