A walk through Chicago turned deadly Saturday when a 7-year-old girl was attacked in broad daylight, leaving her family facing an unimaginable loss.

The victim was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as Edimari Hernandez Chacon. called Edi Mari in some media accounts. She was fatally stabbed shortly before noon on Oct. 3, 2026, in the Chatham neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side.

Sudden attack

According to Chicago police, Edimari was walking southbound when an adult woman approached her. Police said the woman displayed a sharp object and stabbed the child multiple times in the back.

The attack happened at about 11:55 a.m., according to authorities.

Surveillance video reviewed by local news outlets appears to show Edimari walking hand-in-hand with another woman shortly before the attack. The footage provides investigators with a timeline of the moments leading up to the stabbing.

Edimari was rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital, but doctors were unable to save her. She was pronounced dead from her injuries.

Suspect taken into custody

The woman suspected in the stabbing was detained after people who witnessed the attack intervened and prevented her from leaving, police said. Police charged Shavon Gayden, 48, who is black, with first-degree murder, according to ABC7 Chicago. She suffered injuries while being detained and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

After receiving medical care for injuries described as non-life-threatening, Gayden was placed in police custody.

Investigators are still working to establish what led to the attack. Police also have not established a prior relationship between the woman and Edimari.
