HOUSTON, Texas — A Houston chef was handing out food when police say an attempted robbery turned deadly. John Donat was spending the early morning hours of Sept. 30 doing something he had made part of his life: preparing and giving food to people who needed it.

Instead, the 58-year-old chef was fatally shot during an encounter that Houston police say began as an attempted carjacking.

Police were called to an extended-stay hotel in west Houston at about 2:20 a.m. after reports of gunfire. Officers found Donat suffering from a gunshot wound. A Chevrolet Tahoe he had been driving had crashed through a wooden fence in a nearby parking area. Donat was pronounced dead at the scene.

His life focused on others

Donat was a South Carolina native and father of two who had worked as a chef. His son, Nick Donat, said his father had spent the past several years feeding homeless people.

According to family accounts, Donat collected food from local food banks, prepared meals and then distributed them to people who were struggling. His own experiences also shaped that work. Family members said he had battled drug addiction, giving him a personal understanding of people facing similar difficulties.

That work was continuing in the hours before his death.

Investigators said Donat was in his Tahoe and offering food when a man approached the passenger side of the vehicle and demanded money. A witness told police she walked away from the encounter and then heard gunshots. The Tahoe subsequently crashed into the fence, according to police accounts.

Suspect faces capital murder charge

Authorities identified the suspect as 30-year-old Otis Parks. Police said he matched descriptions provided by witnesses, and he was arrested in connection with the killing.

Parks has been charged with capital murder. He was being held in the Harris County Jail on a $250,000 bond, with a court appearance scheduled for Dec. 14, according to published reports.

Records reviewed by ABC13 also reported that Parks had previously served prison time for an aggravated assault conviction and had faced additional felony charges while in jail. Those charges were later dismissed.

The homicide investigation remains active as the case moves through the Harris County court system.

For Donat's family, the circumstances of his death stand in sharp contrast to the activity that occupied much of his later life: using his cooking skills to prepare food for people who had little or none.

Takeaway

We often think of incarceration as punishment for crimes. But we also need to recognize that it can protect people like Donat from people like Parks.
