BRADFORD, England — A woman experiencing homelessness was unable to respond as a man entered her tent and committed sexual acts against her while she lay dying or was already dead, a jury heard in a disturbing case before Bradford Crown Court.
Hassan Shah, 26, was identified in surveillance footage from an incident on Nov. 8, 2025. The recordings showed him entering the woman’s tent, lying beside her and pulling down her clothing. According to evidence presented in court, he made no effort to speak to her or determine whether she needed medical assistance.
The woman remained motionless throughout the incident. Prosecutors said she was either in the final moments of her life or had already died when Shah approached her.
Emergency responders later found the woman dead. The court heard that her death was caused by a combination of synthetic cannabis, commonly known as spice, and alcohol. Prosecutors emphasized that Shah’s actions did not cause her death.
On Monday, Oct. 12, 2026, a jury found he did the acts of attempted rape and assault by penetration.
However, the proceedings differed from a conventional criminal trial. A judge had previously ruled that Shah was unfit to plead because of a learning disability and a low IQ. As a result, the jury was asked to determine whether he had carried out the alleged acts rather than whether he was criminally responsible following a standard trial.
Shah was not present in court during those proceedings.
The distinction matters under English law. A finding that a defendant performed the acts in question is not the same as a conventional guilty verdict following a trial in which the defendant enters a plea. The court must consider the defendant’s circumstances and the appropriate legal outcome.
Judge Kirstie Watson postponed the next stage of the case until December to allow reports about Shah’s condition and circumstances to be prepared.
Because of the ruling that Shah is unfit to plead, he cannot receive a prison sentence for these offenses under the procedure being followed. The judge will instead consider whether a hospital order, a supervision order or a discharge is appropriate.
Takeaway ▼
• The name Hassan Shah is primarily of Pakistani or India'n origin suggesting the suspect is an invader.
• There was no known backlash from feminists.
