DailyKenn.com — Dozens of anti-Israel demonstrators were arrested at Emory University in a violent confrontation with law enforcement officers, with at least one professor seen being forcibly restrained and handcuffed in a widely circulated online video.
The chaotic scene unfolded on the Atlanta campus as officers moved in to dismantle an impromptu tent city set up by protesters early in the morning. A video captured by CNN but shared extensively on social media shows the tumult as officers apprehend demonstrators and place them under arrest.
In one instance, a woman, later identified as Emory economics professor Caroline Fohlin, attempts to intervene as officers arrest a protester. However, she herself is grabbed by an Atlanta police officer and forcefully brought to the ground. Despite her protests and identification as a professor, the officer continues to restrain her with the assistance of another officer, while surrounding protesters hurl insults and accusations.
University president Gregory L. Fenves swiftly issued a statement disavowing the "highly organized outside protesters" and condemning the violence. He expressed sadness over the events and emphasized the seriousness with which the university regards the arrests of its community members.
Another video captured during the mass arrests shows a woman, identified as Noelle McAfee, chair of the philosophy department at Emory, being led away by an Atlanta police officer in tactical gear.
The anti-Israel protests on university campuses across the country have led to over 500 arrests, with a significant number occurring at NYU and Columbia University. Additional arrests have taken place at Yale, the University of Southern California, The Ohio State University, Indiana University Bloomington, and Emory.
