ROCKLEDGE, Pa. (DailyKenn.com) — Husband Faces Murder Charges in Wife's Roadside Shooting Death
Authorities in Montgomery County arrested a Philadelphia man accused of fatally shooting his wife during a heated argument as they drove home from a party, prosecutors announced.
Jose Antonio Luna, 59, told investigators he felt disrespected by his wife, 48-year-old Alisett Schubert, in front of others at the gathering earlier that evening, according to court documents. The couple left the event in Schubert's silver Nissan Murano, heading south on Huntington Pike.
As tensions escalated inside the vehicle around 10 p.m. on Feb. 21, Schubert pulled over near the intersection with Filmore Street and ordered Luna to exit the car, detectives said. Luna then reached into her purse, grabbed her revolver, and fired multiple shots at her, striking her five times, authorities reported.
A nearby SEPTA bus driver, traveling behind the stopped SUV, heard several loud pops resembling gunfire and saw a man matching Luna's description exit the passenger side, approach the driver's door, and flee on foot toward Philadelphia, according to the affidavit of probable cause. The driver immediately alerted dispatchers via his emergency system, providing a detailed suspect description that aided police in the quick apprehension.
Responding Rockledge Borough officers arrived minutes later to find Schubert lying on the ground outside the vehicle, suffering from gunshot wounds to her torso and limbs. Emergency personnel rushed her to Abington Hospital, where medical staff pronounced her dead shortly after arrival.
Police tracked Luna to a location in Philadelphia's Fox Chase neighborhood, about a mile from the scene. Upon confrontation, Luna placed the revolver to his head and pulled the trigger, but the weapon was empty, investigators said. He surrendered without further incident and confessed to the shooting during questioning, admitting he acted out of anger over the perceived slight at the party.
Prosecutors charged Luna with first-degree murder, third-degree murder, and possession of an instrument of crime. He remains held without bail at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for early March.
The incident disrupted traffic on the busy Huntington Pike, a key artery bordering Philadelphia and Abington Township, as authorities secured the area for evidence collection. In Rockledge, a quiet borough of roughly 2,600 residents, neighbors expressed shock at the violence erupting on their streets. "It's heartbreaking—things like this don't happen here," one local resident told reporters, reflecting a sentiment echoed by community leaders who called for increased awareness of domestic abuse.
Schubert had previously confided in a close friend about enduring physical and mental abuse from Luna, court records indicate, highlighting a pattern that authorities say culminated in the tragedy.
The shooting has prompted renewed discussions among local advocacy groups about resources for victims of intimate partner violence, with officials urging those in similar situations to seek help through hotlines and shelters.
