CHICAGO — A suburban woman faces murder charges after authorities say she stole an Uber Eats driver's vehicle and struck him fatally while fleeing the scene early Monday.

Prosecutors allege that Montoya Perry, 33, of Maywood, entered Daniel Figueroa's idling Dodge Caravan around 2 a.m. as he dropped off a food order at Loretto Hospital in the South Austin neighborhood. Figueroa, 28, from Downers Grove, had just completed his shift at Amazon and was earning extra income through the delivery app before heading home.

According to court documents, surveillance footage captured Figueroa exiting the hospital and approaching his van upon noticing the theft in progress. Perry then accelerated, hitting Figueroa with the vehicle and leaving him unresponsive in the 5500 block of West Flournoy Street near Central Avenue. Police reports indicate he suffered severe head injuries.

Emergency responders found Figueroa bleeding on the pavement shortly after the incident. He was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, where medical staff pronounced him dead at 2:46 a.m. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the death a homicide, though an initial autopsy proved inconclusive and awaits further analysis.

Witnesses in the area described hearing a commotion followed by the sound of a vehicle speeding away. One neighbor, who requested anonymity, told investigators they saw a man lying in the street and alerted authorities, believing he had been involved in a hit-and-run. A hospital employee who had ordered the food reportedly discovered Figueroa's body outside after expecting the delivery.

Perry was arrested later that day and charged with first-degree murder and vehicular hijacking. During a detention hearing, a judge ordered her held without bail, citing the violent nature of the crime and community safety concerns. Police stated that Perry has a prior criminal record, though details were not immediately released.

Figueroa's family expressed profound grief over the loss. His girlfriend, Sandra Guerrero, said she grew worried when he failed to return calls or texts after his shift. "His mother contacted me early that morning with the devastating news," Guerrero recounted, adding that she feels adrift without him. Figueroa's father, Carlos, shared memories of his son's passions for fishing, art, and family gatherings, hoping aloud that he endured no prolonged pain.

Community members in South Austin voiced outrage and calls for heightened safety measures for gig workers. Local leaders noted an uptick in carjackings in the area, prompting discussions about enhanced patrols near hospitals and late-night establishments.

The incident highlights ongoing risks faced by delivery drivers in urban settings, with advocates urging ride-sharing companies to bolster security protocols.
