NEW YORK (DailyKenn.com) — Air Force Veteran, 83, Clings to Life After Subway Track Push in Manhattan

An 83-year-old Air Force veteran remained in critical condition Tuesday after authorities said a stranger shoved him onto subway tracks in an unprovoked attack on Manhattan's Upper East Side, leaving him with severe head injuries.

Police said the incident occurred shortly before noon Sunday at the Lexington Avenue-63rd Street station, where suspect Bairon Hernandez, 34, of Brooklyn, first approached 30-year-old Jhon Rodriguez from behind on the southbound platform for the F and Q trains. Without warning or words exchanged, Hernandez allegedly pushed Rodriguez onto the rails, according to investigators.

Moments later, Hernandez turned to Richard Williams, who was standing nearby, and shoved him with force, causing Williams to fall headfirst onto the tracks, police said. Williams struck his head, immediately lost consciousness and began bleeding heavily, witnesses reported.

Rodriguez, despite sustaining injuries to his knees, arm, head and neck, quickly moved to assist Williams. "When I looked at the old man, I saw a large amount of blood coming out of his head. I became more desperate and panicked," Rodriguez told reporters. He managed to lift the unresponsive Williams closer to the platform edge and called for help.

A bystander jumped down onto the tracks to aid Rodriguez, and together they hoisted Williams back to safety with assistance from other passengers on the platform, according to accounts provided to police. No train was approaching at the time, averting further tragedy. Hernandez fled the scene immediately after the pushes, authorities said.

Medics rushed both men to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell. Rodriguez received treatment for his injuries and was released, though he later returned due to ongoing pain and trauma. "I felt really scared. I was trembling. I felt disoriented," he said.

Williams, a lifelong New Yorker from Roosevelt Island who had been heading out for routine errands, suffered multiple fractures, severe head trauma and brain bleeding. Family members said he remained on a ventilator and unresponsive. "It doesn’t look good. He is on life support," his daughter, Debbie Williams, said from his bedside. "We’re praying for a miracle."

Relatives described Richard Williams as an active retiree who enjoyed walking and reading, having recently marked his 55th wedding anniversary. His granddaughter, Samantha Loria, said he had overcome significant hardships in the past. "He survived a fire, cancer recently, and all he wanted to do is walk," she said. "He would give anyone the last shirt on his back. It doesn’t hurt anything to be kind."

The New York Police Department released surveillance images and cell phone video captured by Rodriguez on Monday, offering a $3,500 reward for information. Hernandez was arrested around 5 a.m. Tuesday after tips led detectives to him.

Hernandez, who police said has no prior arrests in New York and is originally from Honduras, faces charges of attempted murder, assault, attempted assault and reckless endangerment. He denied the allegations when questioned, according to authorities. A judge was set to determine bail eligibility later Tuesday.

The attack marks the ninth reported unprovoked push onto subway tracks in the city this year, police statistics show.
