Marietta Allison had traveled from her home in Austin to Houston on Friday to accompany a close friend through a chemotherapy session at MD Anderson Cancer Center, according to court records and police statements. The friend, whom Allison regarded as family, was battling stage 4 cancer and required support during the treatment.

The sequence of events began around 10:50 p.m. that evening when Allison and her friend returned to a residence in the Heights area following the medical appointment. With no immediate parking available near the home, Allison continued driving around the block to find a spot while her friend proceeded inside.

Moments later, the friend reported hearing a sharp scream followed by the sound of a single gunshot from outside. She rushed out to discover Allison wounded in her vehicle, police said.

Investigators determined that an 18-year-old suspect, identified as Darius Dewayne Hall, had approached Allison as she parked. He initially tried to seize her purse, prompting her to resist, prosecutors stated during a court hearing. In the ensuing struggle, Hall allegedly drew a firearm and shot Allison once in the neck.

Allison was transported to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel pronounced her dead shortly after arrival, according to the Houston Police Department.

Hall then fled the scene in Allison's stolen vehicle, authorities said. Police later located the car and initiated a pursuit, which ended with Hall's apprehension. Officers recovered two firearms from inside the vehicle, which Hall had attempted to conceal, leading to additional charges.

Hall, who was already under supervision for prior felony offenses, now faces capital murder in connection with Allison's death, as well as evading arrest in a motor vehicle and tampering with physical evidence, court documents show.
