LAKELAND, Fla. (DailyKenn.com) — Authorities Arrest 23-Year-Old in Deadly Dispute at Pool Hall

Police in Lakeland arrested a young man accused of gunning down a 48-year-old father during a late-night argument that escalated into a shootout outside a popular local bar.

The confrontation began shortly after midnight on March 5, when Steven Michael Magee, a regular patron at Wally's Poolhall on East Main Street, got into a heated exchange with Kevin Lamont Reed Jr. in the parking lot, according to investigators. Witnesses described Magee as attempting to calm the situation, consistent with his reputation for intervening in disputes to prevent violence.

As the argument intensified, Reed appeared to walk away, but he abruptly spun back around, pulled a concealed handgun, and fired several shots at Magee, authorities said. Struck multiple times, Magee drew his own legally carried firearm and returned fire, though it's unclear if any rounds hit Reed. Magee collapsed on the sidewalk, unconscious and bleeding from his wounds.

Responding officers arrived around 12:35 a.m. and immediately administered aid before rushing Magee to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries later that morning. An autopsy confirmed multiple gunshot wounds as the cause of death.

Detectives pieced together the sequence from surveillance footage, physical evidence at the scene, and statements from several bystanders who were leaving the establishment. One witness recounted hearing raised voices about a minor disagreement inside the bar that spilled outdoors, followed by the sudden crack of gunfire. Another described seeing Reed flee the area on foot after the shots, discarding an item believed to be related to the weapon.

Reed, 23, of Lakeland, evaded initial capture but was apprehended at his home later that evening, around 10 p.m. on March 5. He faces charges of second-degree murder and tampering with evidence, police announced. Authorities said Reed provided a statement after his arrest, admitting to the altercation but claiming self-defense, though evidence contradicted his account.

Magee's widow, Bridget Magee, told reporters her husband was a devoted family man who prioritized peace, often stepping in to defuse tensions among friends and strangers alike. "He was non-confrontational whenever possible," she said, noting their relationship dated back to their teenage years and that he leaves behind five children ranging from preteens to young adults.

The incident marks the city's second homicide of 2026, prompting officials to review security measures at late-night venues. Reed remains in custody at the Polk County Jail, with a court appearance scheduled for next week. Prosecutors indicated they may seek additional charges pending further ballistic analysis.
