A Columbus truck driver is facing multiple felony charges after a devastating highway crash that claimed the lives of a young Ohio family, including a one-year-old child.

Authorities say 50-year-old Modou Ngom was operating a commercial tractor-trailer northbound on Interstate 71 on the evening of April 11 when traffic slowed in an active construction zone near the U.S. 36 and State Route 37 interchange. According to investigators, the truck failed to stop as it approached a line of vehicles halted by congestion, triggering a violent chain-reaction crash involving nine vehicles.

The impact occurred shortly before 6:30 p.m. and set off a cascade of collisions. At least one vehicle caught fire amid the wreckage, complicating rescue efforts and forcing a full shutdown of the interstate for several hours as emergency crews responded and investigators began reconstructing the scene.

Killed in the crash were Dr. Lynnea Soposki, 36, a veterinarian, her husband Luke Soposki, 37, and their 1-year-old son, Logan. The family was traveling together in a pickup truck when it was struck from behind. Three other individuals were transported to area hospitals with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Witness video obtained by local media shows the semi-truck barreling into stopped traffic, striking a passenger vehicle and setting off the multi-car collision. Investigators with the Ohio State Highway Patrol say the primary factor appears to be the truck’s failure to slow for backed-up traffic in the clearly marked construction zone, though the full investigation remains ongoing.

Ngom was taken into custody shortly after the crash and has been charged with three counts of aggravated vehicular manslaughter. Prosecutors have indicated that additional charges related to the injured victims could follow. During an initial court appearance, bond was set at $500,000, and the driver was ordered not to operate a vehicle if released.

Records show Ngom owned and operated a small trucking company and had no significant criminal history beyond minor traffic-related issues. State transportation and regulatory agencies have launched parallel reviews into the crash and the driver’s commercial operations.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 21, though the case could proceed directly to a grand jury.
