BISMARCK, N.D. — A single gunshot ended the life of a 22-year-old Bismarck resident in late July, leaving authorities to piece together what they describe as a targeted confrontation between two young men who knew each other.
Croix Clooten died after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head on July 26, 2026. Police responded shortly after 11 p.m. to reports of a shooting and found him inside his Slingshot, a distinctive three-wheeled vehicle, still at the scene. Officers provided immediate aid before paramedics transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators focused on 20-year-old Loton Turner of nearby Mandan. Turner faces charges of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm as a convicted felon. A judge set his bond at $1 million during his initial court appearance on July 28. Turner appeared via video from detention, and his trial is tentatively set for February.
According to court records, Clooten was driving when a white SUV approached. One shot was fired, striking him. His passenger escaped injury and sought help from a nearby truck driver. The passenger identified Turner as the shooter, pointing to previous tensions between the two, including an earlier encounter involving a gun. Turner later told detectives he fired toward the Slingshot but believed it was a BB gun and did not intend to hit anyone.
The case marks the third homicide reported in Bismarck this year. Police have asked the public for any surveillance video from the area that might show vehicles or activity around the time of the incident.
This incident highlights how convicted felons with a history of violence should be monitored. Unannounced personal searches of such individuals could disarm them and save lives.
Authorities continue to investigate and have emphasized that the evidence so far suggests no broader risk to the public.
