BISMARCK, N.D. — A single gunshot ended the life of a 22-year-old Bismarck resident in late July, leaving authorities to piece together what they describe as a targeted confrontation between two young men who knew each other.

Croix Clooten died after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head on July 26, 2026. Police responded shortly after 11 p.m. to reports of a shooting and found him inside his Slingshot, a distinctive three-wheeled vehicle, still at the scene. Officers provided immediate aid before paramedics transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators focused on 20-year-old Loton Turner of nearby Mandan. Turner faces charges of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm as a convicted felon. A judge set his bond at $1 million during his initial court appearance on July 28. Turner appeared via video from detention, and his trial is tentatively set for February.

According to court records, Clooten was driving when a white SUV approached. One shot was fired, striking him. His passenger escaped injury and sought help from a nearby truck driver.
