A woman with an academic background connected to the study of violent behavior among adolescents has allegedly been killed by two young males. A late-night shooting in Delaware, Ohio, has become a homicide investigation involving three people, including the 18-year-old daughter of the woman who died.

Tamela D. Dutcher, 55, was fatally shot shortly after midnight Aug. 14 at her home in Delaware, according to authorities and published reports. Deputies responding to a 911 call found Dutcher suffering from a gunshot wound. She was taken to a hospital, where she later died.

The investigation moved quickly after the shooting. Detectives with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, gathered evidence and worked to determine what led to Dutcher’s death. By Friday afternoon, authorities had obtained a search warrant and made two arrests.

Christian Evans, 20, and Dajameous Payne, 21, both of Delaware, were arrested on murder charges after investigators carried out a search in the city. Both were booked into the Delaware County Jail. The charges are allegations, and both men are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

A third person was also taken into custody. Investigators charged Dutcher’s daughter, Bryanna Dutcher, 18, with obstruction of justice. Authorities had not publicly detailed the specific conduct behind that charge in the reports available at the time.

The case has drawn additional attention because Tamela Dutcher had an academic background connected to the study of violent behavior among adolescents. In 2002, she co-authored a research paper examining adolescent homicide and discussing patterns among young offenders.

That earlier work now stands in stark contrast to the circumstances surrounding her death, although the research itself does not establish any connection to the current criminal case.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Prosecutors will ultimately have to prove the allegations against those charged beyond a reasonable doubt.
