A Family Home Becomes a Crime Scene

A Thursday morning shooting in Gastonia, North Carolina, left two family members dead and two others critically injured. Before investigators could determine what led to the attack, the two people accused of carrying it out had fled across state lines.

Victoria “Heather” Moore, 50, and Josiah “Megan” Bumgardner, 38, were identified as the two people killed in the Sept. 10, 2026, shooting. Both were found inside a home where four people had been shot. No photo of Bumgardner was found.

Gaston County police responded to a report of gunfire at approximately 8:43 a.m. When officers arrived, they discovered the victims. Moore and Bumgardner were pronounced dead at the scene, while two other victims were taken to CaroMont Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

As of the department’s Sept. 11 update, the surviving victims remained in critical but stable condition.

Investigators Identify Two Suspects

Detectives quickly focused on two people who also lived at the home: 26-year-old Camryn Moore and 29-year-old Cory Armstrong, both present as black.

The two suspects left Gaston County shortly after the shooting.

Police obtained warrants charging both with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder.

The U.S. Marshals Service Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force joined the search. Investigators tracked the pair through multiple states as the manhunt continued into Friday morning.

Pursuit Ends in Ohio

The search ended near Athens, Ohio, on Sept. 11, when the Ohio State Highway Patrol located the suspects’ vehicle and attempted a traffic stop.

Authorities said the pair led officers on a pursuit through multiple counties. The vehicle crashed after the suspects swerved to avoid spike strips deployed in the roadway.

Officers reported hearing two gunshots after the crash. A drone was then used to inspect the vehicle, where both suspects were found dead.

The circumstances surrounding those deaths remain under investigation. Authorities have not officially established who fired the shots or announced the manner of death.

Questions Remain

The deaths of Moore and Bumgardner, along with the injuries to two others, have left investigators examining what happened inside the Gastonia home and what prompted the shooting.

Gaston County police said their investigation remains active, even though the search for the suspects has ended.

Authorities said Camryn Moore, one of the two suspects, was Heather Moore’s daughter and Bumgardner’s niece. The other suspect, Cory Armstrong, was Camryn Moore’s boyfriend and also lived in the home, according to the New York Post. Camryn and Armstrong are accused of killing Camryn’s mother and her aunt, who identified as her uncle.
